Conceived during the peak of Australia's hard dance explosion, the series was spearheaded by Melbourne DJ, promoter and producer Jason Midro, alongside some of the country's leading DJs including Nik Fish and John Ferris. At a time when hard trance and hard NRG dominated dancefloors across Australia, the Hard NRG albums brought the biggest European anthems and cutting-edge underground releases into homes, cars and portable CD players nationwide.

Unlike traditional compilation albums, the Hard NRG series was designed to recreate the experience of standing on a packed dancefloor at three o'clock in the morning. Jason Midro's contribution to the series helped establish its unmistakable identity. Already renowned through his Bass Station club nights and Sound Of Now Productions, Midro became one of the defining musical voices behind the Hard NRG brand. His selections introduced Australian audiences to many of Europe's leading producers and labels — featuring artists such as DJ Scot Project, Cosmic Gate, Warp Brothers, ASY*S, DJ Spoke, Beam, DJ Wag, Kai Tracid, Mauro Picotto and Dumonde, among many others who would go on to become household names among Australian ravers.
Across multiple volumes, Jason mixed or co-mixed several entries in the series, working alongside Nik Fish and John Ferris as the franchise evolved — consistently showcasing the latest developments in hard trance and hard NRG while maintaining the driving energy that defined the genre.
